Albania

Turquoise beaches, a fortress town and mountain villages, closer together than people expect.

Why we take guests here

Albania is the newest name on this list and the one most guests have never planned a trip around, which is exactly its advantage. The Riviera in the south carries the turquoise water people fly to Greece for, Ksamil’s beaches and coves reached by a coast road that keeps climbing and dropping to a new view. An hour inland the country changes completely: Theth sits in a mountain valley reached through a gorge, a stone church and a scatter of farmhouses under the Accursed Mountains. Berat earns its nickname, the city of a thousand windows, tiers of Ottoman houses climbing the hill above the river, and Shkodra’s Rozafa Castle looks out over the lake the same way it has for centuries. None of this is far apart. A short country with a private driver lets us close a beach morning with a castle sunset the same day. We plan Albania before it gets crowded, not after.

What a week here looks like

  • Ksamil’s beaches and coves along the Albanian Riviera
  • A boutique boat morning on the Shala River
  • Theth’s mountain valley and stone church, under the Accursed Mountains
  • Berat, the city of a thousand windows, climbing the hill above the river
  • Rozafa Castle in Shkodra, with the lake at your feet
  • A private VIP vehicle for the whole route, so the days close together

Before you go

How do you handle the planning and the entry paperwork?

A planner walks you through the current entry and document requirements for your passport before anything is confirmed, then checks them again close to departure. Albania is straightforward for most passports, but we confirm it for your dates rather than assuming last season still applies.

Is Albania worth combining with Montenegro or Bosnia?

Often, yes. The three countries share a coast and a set of mountain roads, and a wider Balkan route with one vehicle and one driver moves between them without the trip turning into three separate holidays glued together.

When is the Riviera at its best?

The warmer months carry the water and the beach days most guests picture, and we plan the mountain legs, Theth in particular, around the dates when the passes are actually open.
